Hugley Hall Gardens. At their farewell party in the cavenous trunk hall, The Sworram, a five girl group, give the performance of their lives as they sing their latest hit song. They thank all the rooties in the audience for their support in helping them grow big and beautiful and promise to return should they ever be needed. The rooties all look gaunt and hungry. Martha, the kindest of The Sworram, gives her friend Noino a friendship bracelet. The other Sworram are: Mavis who moans all the time, Madeleine who is bossy, Maude a drama queen and Matilda a temptress. As they settle into their new home, the greenhouse, to prepare for the annual show, Madeleine makes them all swear to forget the past and think only of their future.
